Description
Math Competition Club or MC2 (MC2) is an advanced math program intended to get kids excited about learning math and prepare them for success in the many popular math competitions (CML, VML, AMC-8, and Math Counts).
The program is intended for students in grades 4-6 who have a strong interest in math. We plan to have two groups: the “Archimedeans” (advanced) and the “Pythagoreans” (intermediate). A math placement test will be conducted before classes begin to confirm that the student is in the appropriate group, and in some cases, students may be reassigned. Classes will begin soon (our target is mid to end of September-an email will be sent out with more detailed information) and end in March. This year the program will be a hybrid program, of both in-person and online. The Intermediate class will be held in-person on Mondays at Kent Gardens Elementary, beginning a little before 4pm until 5pm, and online on Wednesdays from 4:45-5:45pm. The Advanced class will be held in-person at Kent Gardens Elementary on Tuesdays beginning a little before 4pm until 5pm, and online on Thursdays from 4:45-5:45pm. There will be no classes on student holidays. Students will not have access to Kent Gardens facilities during MC2 zoom (online) sessions. All materials, recordings, assessments, and answer key will be available in Google Classroom.
The cost is $850 per student. We ask that families pay the entire amount up front and make a full-year commitment to MC2 to ensure the viability of the program for the entire year. We are unable to provide a refund on this class once a student is enrolled.
MC2 is taught by long-time coach Jahangir Hossain, who has been teaching Kent Garden students for Math League, AMC 8, and Mathcounts since 2012. Dr. Jay has extensive experience in coaching students from Longfellow Middle School, McLean High School, and Thomas Jefferson High School (TJHSST).
In the event that students outside of Kent Gardens enroll in the program, priority will be given to former Kent Gardens students should the program reach capacity.
